I got up at 6 a.m. after a bad night of sleep.

I read my email.  My mother is selling my childhood home and purchasing a new home with my sister, brother in law, niece and nephew. More on this later.

I have students demanding grades before the end of of classes or even finals week.  Da noive!

I have students begging for A's (which really ticks me off - if you did not write at A level, you're not going to get an A!!).

I have a life y'know, and 80 students.  Be patient already!!

BUT

My husband cleaned the kitchen and did the windows and then cooked breakfast for me. (No, you may not borrow him.)

We went to Costco and laughed at people and dreamed of a pergola off the back of the house where the sun from the west could be somewhat tamed..

I gave the mechanic five hundred dollars as partial ransom for my Saturn.   I was assured that "she's got another fifty thousand miles on her."

I went to Borders and cashed in my gift card husband gave me for Christmas.  I purchased Kerouac's "Dharma Bums" which I have never read and a paperback edition of Hillary Clinton's Living History and a set of three little Moleskine blank journals.  Brown paper cover, unlined, plain paper.  Just the right size for my purse and not so large that they are daunting.  They will hold this summer's poems.

I was tempted to ask my multivariable calc. professor what was my final test score, two weeks before I'll take the test.

See, he deals with mathematics beyong the 4th dimension. I asked him once "What does or how does one render surfaces in R5?" "Can you visualize it?"

Well, he kind of acknowledged that he could, but only in his mind. So, I looked up to see what type of research he does for the university. Topology! The man spends his time twisting and streching surfaces ih three space (R3). Useful, especially with a hand full of "Play-Do."

So, since I only deal mostly with 3D math. and touch on the fourth (time), I figure if he's so advanced (dealing with multi-dimensions) he should know our final score days before us students take the final.

Do you think us students expect too much from our instructors?

Yes and no. For students who are bright, cooperative, and do their work (I'm not asking for butt kissing or leaping through hoops to do extra credit) I am willing to do a little extra, such as letting them know what their final grades are. These students are usually the ones who have completed the coursework early or who I am positive will manage A's on their portfolios (grading compositions is a lot different than grading mathematics - it is a lot more subjective). On the other hand, I dislike getting multiple emails from students written in tones that seem to demand that I tell them their grade as soon as the last class day has ended. I like to take at least a one-day breather before I delve into final essays and portfolios. Not allowing me time to de-stress is asking too much and also colors my attitude when grading (unfortunate but true).

Generally, however, no I do not think students expect too much. Grade anticipation/anxiety comes with the job and that's why I have a blog - so I can vent :o)
